The leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Rajya Sabha, Derek O’Brien, on Monday raised in the House the issue of attacks on churches in many places in the country. Referring to the attacks and burning down of churches specially in Assam, Meghalaya, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka, he wondered ‘what is happening’ in all these places.
Terming it an effort to polarize the society, the TMC MP questioned the silence over the issue despite continuous attacks on churches.
Referring to Article 25 of the Constitution, Mr. O’Brien said all people are entitled to freedom of conscience and the right to freely profess, practice and propagate the religion.
Recalling the delay in renewal of the FCRA registration of the Missionaries of Charity, he said the government did not even spare Nobel laureate Mother Teresa.
