On Thursday, while stopping at the bookshop at Indira Gandhi International Airport, I saw the book 101 Reasons: Why I Will Vote For Modi." It is a graphic novel by Shantanu Gupta. I did not even touch the book, so this is not at all a comment on it. The title triggered a thought, which is reflected here. So many reasons welled up in my mind for why I would not vote for Modi. Let me list them here.
1. Meditation is prayer at its best. It is done in seclusion, far from the maddening crowd. What Modi did at Kanyakumari was farcical.
2. It is not compulsory to go to church/temple/mosque etc. It is not proper to spend crores of public money to visit such places. Modi should spend his own money.
3. Modi tells the world that the Taj Mahal is not the only place of attraction in India. Will any country in the world drive away the tourists so that its ruler can meditate?
4. The Taj Mahal is still the greatest tourist attraction. Why make such a comment? Why did he not mention the Statue of Unity, which he built at an enormous cost that has no takers?
5. On the subject of tourism, why does India Gate, built by the British, attract thousands every day when a nearby facility Modi built attracts only hundreds and another built by Advani attracts only dozens?
6. Is it proper for a ruler to wear a new costume every day? Whom does he try to dazzle, the Daridra Narayans of India?
7. Does Modi believe that Muslims are "baby makers" and "infiltrators"? He should either substantiate his statement or apologise to the Muslim community.
8. Has any leader in a democratic country given a call for an Opposition-free nation? Will he apologise to the Congress for making such a call?
9. Modi always referred to Rahul Gandhi as a prince. He made several disparaging remarks against him. Does he know that the prince of Wayanad and Amethi is the real winner of this election?
10. Regarding dynasty, does Modi realise that the BJP is full of dynastic people like the Scindias? What right does his party have to pillory Rahul Gandhi, who proved that he is popular both in the Hindi heartland and Dravida south?
11. Last time, Modi said Gandhi won because of Christian votes. Did he win Rae Bareli with Christian votes?
12. If Modi should be grateful to anyone, it is Priyanka Gandhi. If she had contested against him in Varanasi, he would have gone for vanvas by now.
13. What message did Modi give by fielding only one Muslim candidate in this election? That they are expendable.
14. Does Modi realise that the BJP won at least 10 seats in UP and MP because of the BSP, which divided the anti-BJP votes?
15. If I tabulate all the lies he said — like visiting Kolkata as a child to see the Metro when I, who am younger than him, saw the construction of the first metro — I will consume all my space with it.
16. Modi owes an explanation to the nation on how he was created non-biologically. Scientists will benefit.
17. When Modi found time to visit all states to seek votes, why did he ignore Manipur?
18. If he is a leader, not a reader, why does he not address a press conference and answer all the questions and their supplementaries? In contrast, Rahul Gandhi has no problem talking to the Press.
19. Does Modi realise that it was stupid to call the BJP Manifesto Modi's Guarantees? What guarantee can a person who crossed the national average life expectancy give? Bajaj Finance refused to finance my purchase of a mobile because I crossed 70.
20. There is a Malayalam saying, one should stop singing when the voice is still good. Modi missed a golden opportunity to quit gracefully.
21. It is not proper to blame Modi alone. The BJP has more capable, educated persons than him. Why are they tolerating him?
22. Can Modi face a democratic election for the BJP legislature party leadership?
23. Naveen Patnaik supported all the BJP's decisions. What did Modi do to him to get a wafer-thin margin?
24. People elect a leader to lead the nation, not to consecrate temples. What does Modi know about consecration? It was an affront to Hinduism.
25. The single largest margin is that of the BJP candidate in Indore. How did he manage it? By threatening the Congress nominee with a murder charge, forcing him to withdraw at the 11th hour. Yet, 2.5 lakh votes were registered for NOTA.
26. Modi's party did worse in Surat where it forced all the candidates to withdraw. The EC declared the BJP nominee elected by depriving the voters of choosing between him and NOTA. His election needs to be nullified.
27. Did Modi read the Congress manifesto? Did he read the pre-partition Muslim League manifesto? Why did he say that the Congress manifesto was a copy?
28. Modi, you will be sworn in as PM. It is not a coronation to invite world leaders. When did you last invite Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif? Why are you ignoring Pakistan and the Maldives?
29. Modi wants the BJP to retain its home, finance, foreign affairs, and speakership posts. Why can't he share such posts with NDA partners?
30. Does Modi realise that not fielding Muslims was improper? Does he know that a Muslim fielded by the Congress in Assam won with the largest majority?
31. Will Modi introduce a common civil code?
32. What about unrolling the national population register? Will Amit Shah be allowed to throw the "infiltrators" into the Bay of Bengal?
33. Will Modi allow his friends like Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani to become richer than the majority of the people?
34. Arvind Kejriwal, who supported Modi on the vivisection of J&K, is now in jail. What about another chief minister in the Northeast who was involved in a major scandal when he was with Congress?
35. Will the BJP remain a washing machine for the corrupt?
36. Will Modi take action against those who made big money in the name of cooked-up exit polls?
37. The Army is a national institution. Will Modi end the Agniveer scheme, which is meant for the swayamsevaks?
38. Will Modi throw in the dustbin the Kovind Committee report on the one-nation-one-election slogan?
39. Will Modi give farmers the right to Minimum Support Price as the Congress gave the people the Right to Information?
40. Will Modi ask all the governors, including the one facing a rape charge, to resign so that new persons can be appointed in consultation with the NDA partners?
41. Modi claims credit for the victory in Thrissur. Did he listen to Suresh Gopi, who mentioned national leaders like Indira Gandhi while thanking the electorate and entities like the Lord of the North and Lourdes Matha of Thrissur?
42. Will Modi give an assurance that the basic structure of the Constitution will not be altered?
43. Will Modi restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir?
44. Does Modi realise that his policies allowed an assassin's son to get elected to Parliament? This is the result of allowing a Malegaon terror accused to become an MP from Bhopal.
45. Does Modi still think that Gandhi became popular only after the film by that name was released?
46. Why was Gandhi's statue in the Parliament complex removed and placed somewhere else? Also, Shivaji's and Ambedkar's? Is it to spite the people who rejected him?
47. The election of a Samajwadi Party candidate from Faizabad, who also happens to be a Dalit, shows that secularism, not Hindutva, is the core belief of the people.
48. Does Modi realise that an overwhelming majority of the people do not believe that Hinduism is under threat?
49. Will Modi put an end to the rewriting of history?
50. Will Modi recognise that India won independence in 1947 and not 2014?
51. Will Modi admit that the Mughal and British rule cannot be obliterated from the books and that they played a role in the growth of the country?
52. Will Modi stop glorifying the past when a vast majority of the people suffered from untouchability and indignities for centuries?
53. Will Modi appreciate the role Christian missionaries played in spreading education and public health in this country?
54. Does Modi realise that food is a personal choice? He has every right to have his dhokla, while I have every right to eat mutton and chicken kebabs. As an aside, my income does not allow that luxury.
55. Will Modi punish all those who drive the cows to the roads as severely as he punishes those who slaughter them for beef?
56. Will Modi appoint a commission to find out how the anti-cow slaughter laws have adversely affected the cow population?
57. Will Modi stop promoting the Gujarat model of development where the workers are not even given statutory wages and begging is rampant?
58. Will Modi make the Constitution Amendment Bill non-discriminatory against Muslims?
59. Will Modi restore the minority scholarship scheme to its pristine glory?
60. Will Modi stop grabbing the jobs of others, like performing prana pratishta?
61. The last time Smriti Irani lost in Amethi, she was given the job of HRD Minister. Does he know that people celebrate her defeat?
62. There are hundreds of Christians in jails on false charges of conversion. Will Modi release them?
63. Amit Shah was the haughtiest minister. He antagonised more voters than anyone. He deserves to be in a place where he once was, certainly not as Home Minister.
64. The NDA should prepare a minimum common programme for the government in consultation with the BJP's allies and follow it strictly. No more decisions like the vivisection of J&K.
65. Modi should consult some intelligent people before asking citizens to use vessels to make a cacophony of sound to drive away the coronavirus.
66. Changing the names of places is as silly as asking people to switch off electric lights and light diyas instead. Modi should refrain from such acts.
67. The Enforcement Directorate and the CBI have specific jobs. They should not be misused to target Modi's political opponents.
68. Modi should realise that the rule of law should prevail, not the rule of Modi or the BJP.
69. English is as much Indian as Hindi. Both should co-exist and flourish along with regional languages. Modi should not push Hindi down the throats of non-Hindi speakers.
70. Wide roads are good, but the health of the people is still better. The state should run hospitals and dispensaries for the poor, while the rich can go to the Apollos and Medantas.
71. Railways serve a social good. There is no need to privatise them. There should be more investment to improve services. Along with Vande Bharat, other trains should also be modernised.
72. States like Kerala and Tamil Nadu should not be discriminated against because they are ruled by non-BJP parties.
73. The Constitution mandates Modi to promote scientific temper, not superstition.
74. The nation needs more laboratories, schools, colleges, and universities than statues and temples.
75. The government should honour the law that froze the status of the Gyanvapi mosque and other "disputed" structures.
76. If anyone attempts lynching, no mercy should be shown to them.
77. The leather industry has suffered during the BJP rule. It needs to be promoted. Muslims and Dalits are mainly dependent on it.
78. The voters of UP proved that they do not approve of the double-engine government of Yogi Adityanath. He should be told to uphold Rajdharma at all times.
79. Bulldozers are useful in construction. They should not be used against Muslims. Also, those who suffered under the Bulldozer Raj should be compensated.
80. Those who lost their houses and properties in Manipur — whether Meitei or Kuki — should be paid compensation. The chief minister should be asked to leave his office.
81. Respect can be earned, not demanded. We should treat our neighbours better. We should restore the pre-2014 diplomatic relations with Pakistan.
82. Modi must give adequate representation to Muslims, Christians, and others in the Cabinet.
83. Modi should stop using the Prime Minister's name for government programmes.
84. The people of India love peace and harmony. They hate hatred and violence. Anyone who preaches it should be put behind bars, even if he or she is a party MP.
85. Modi should remember that respect begets respect, and love begets love. For want of space, I conclude here, wishing Modi and his team all the very best. May God guide him to serve the country till he attains 75, the age when he can serve the nation as a member of the Margadarshak Mandal in the company of veterans LK Advani and MM Joshi.
