A Life Well-Lived

Life is not a structure, it is a process, and living is a dynamic process that needs to be monitored constantly. It’s a long-term project requiring endurance and strength. In that long journey there is no question of being negligent at any point. Here are a few tips on living a good life:

A Good Heart: The most important of all is to have a great heart. Heart is the symbol of love. A person’s loving nature is the most important. Viktor Frankl was a Jew in a Nazi death camp. He discovered something amazing one frigid dark morning while guards were beating and kicking him and his co-prisoners as they stumbled over snow on the road. Nazis had taken all that he had, his family, his home, and the life he lived, but they could not take away his ability to love! His discovery was: “No one can take from me my ability to love, that thrilled me.” How many others made this discovery? Jesus made it. Martin Luther King Jr,  Mother Theresa and Nelson Mandela made it.

A Brilliant Mind: My mind is the most wonderful gift I have and I am aware of it. I also know that I must try my best to keep it fresh and dynamic. I have no other important duty than keeping my mind fresh. I must do the exercises to keep it young and active. When I see the rising sun, I see shining light, and when I turn my back to the sun, I see shadows. Both are my choice. Intellectual curiosity is an important attribute to possess. Selective reading, and being aware of what happens to our people, to our country, and the whole world is to be in my daily reflection schedule. Nothing is more important; nothing is to be excluded.

Boundless Courage: Courage is one of the most dynamic qualities. It gives the power to act, face your fears and to do the right thing always. The opposite is lack of self-confidence. A courageous person has the strength to attempt anything. In the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, the need of the time for India was to cut off East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh). The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, analyzing the international scenario, decided to separate East Pakistan from the West Pakistan (present-day Pakistan). There was severe opposition from some of the world powers, including the U.S. Fierce battle ensued. India was on the verge of defeat. The then Field Marshal General Sam Manekshaw came forward and expressed his courageous plan to realize the dream of the Prime Minister. He was given full authority to take up the challenge. He did it well with the full alignment of the Army, Navy and Air Force. It was the most courageous decision of Indira Gandhi.

Joyful Laughter: Laughter is a vibrant action. It keeps not just the person happy but also those who come in contact with them. Developing a sense of humor is easier said than done but having a pleasant demeanor goes a long way. It keeps one relaxed and joyful and also keeps others cheerful.
